Victor Pemberton is a hugely established author and playwright who over the past 45 years has contributed to iconic Cult series such as Ace of Wands, Timeslip, Tightropeand ofcourse Doctor Who. However it is his contribution to radio that we celebrate in this volume of five radio scripts.

I look back with great affection to my days in radio,” says Victor Pemberton; “…not only because of the talented and considerate people who worked in BBC Radio Drama in those days, but also because writing for radio taught me how to use my imagination, how to use the spoken word with no help from background sets, how to present a character to my listeners and let them decide what those characters looked like”.

This volume will include the following scripts, complete with original notes, deleted and alternate scenes:

THE GOLDEN WATCH – Victor Pemberton’s first script for radio, produced in 1961, based on the extraordinary circumstances of his own father’s retirement.

THE SLIDE – One of Victor’s most celebrated radio plays is this supernatural thriller 1966, originally featuring the vocal talents of Maurice Denham, Roger Delgado, David Spenser and Miriam Margoles.

KILL THE PHARAOH - An eight episode adventure from 1967; Elizabeth Warwick, a London doctor in the National Health Service, finds her holiday to Cairo and the Valley of the Kings in Luxor soon turns into a nightmare of international crime and intrigue.

THE FALL OF MR HUMPTY – From 1975 this ‘Nightmare for Radio’ starred Timothy West who has a strange meeting on the last train of the night…

DARK – A psychological supernatural play from 1978 that starred Honor Blackman and Nigel Anthony. Why is an American woman living in London constantly haunted by the spirit of her dead British husband?

Spanning 400 pages, this new collection of scripts – printed here for the first time – features newly written introductions by Victor Pemberton himself.

“I’m thrilled that I am able to bring these scripts to a new generation of reader and listener. Make no mistake about it, radio is a wonderful training ground for the writer, and I hope that those who have the power of commission in radio drama today will never fail to encourage the fertile minds of those who have so much to offer”.
